Howard Gardner has researched multiple intelligences. Logical-mathematical intelligence, or logic smart, is one of the eight we each have. When it’s a strength, you’ll know because these people think with questions and ask more questions when they’re excited.
Children are smart when they study with their logic-smart abilities. Because in-class and homework assignments typically involve questions, the logic-smart intelligence is an easy one to use in all classes.
Ask and answer questions. Predict the questions your teachers will ask in class and on tests. Practice answering them out loud and in writing.
Use if/then thinking and look for cause-effect relationships. Ask and answer “What if?” questions.
Strategically use specific thinking verbs. Just like logic-smart learners can predict questions they’ll be asked, they can predict which verbs might be used in class discussions. They can then practice thinking with them when reading assignments. For example, we can think in order to describe, predict, compare, evaluate, analyze, sequence, reorganize, define, and diagram.
Experiments, data collections, research, and debate can all work well for logic-smart children. So can giving them objects to explore and going on field trips.
Young logic-smart children may struggle to learn to read when their teachers and parents only use fiction. The children can think some of the stories are nonsense and even “ridiculous.” For example, rather than a story book about an octopus playing baseball, logic-smart children may prefer to learn to read from a book about octopuses.
Students who are smart with their logic smarts study with questions and benefit from problem solving. Let’s all be like this – smart!
